About the Author

Clifford L. Stott was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1949. He has been an avid researcher since 1971. While pursuing a career in paramedics, he established a parallel career in 1984 with the founding of Clifford L. Stott & Associates, a genealogical research firm specializing in U.S. and British research. While he no longer accepts client work, he remains actively involved in researching the history and genealogy of his own family. His father descends from six pioneer Utah families, all with roots in England. His mother descends from colonial New England families and recent English immigrants. Among his credentials are the following:

• Accredited Genealogist (AG) retired (1988-2017) by the International Commission for the Accreditation of Professional Genealogists.

• Certified Genealogist (CG), retired (1999–2024) by the Board for Certification of Genealogists.

• Fellow of the American Society of Genealogists (FASG), elected in 1998.

• ​Contributing editor, The American Genealogist, 1996–present.

• Consulting editor, New England Historical and Genealogical Register, 2001–present.

• Recipient of the 1985 Francis M. Chipman Award by the Mormon History  Association, “Best Young Scholar,” for his submission Search for Sanctuary: Brigham Young and the White Mountain Expedition (Salt Lake City: Univ. of Utah Press, 1984).
